Description

POSITION OBJECTIVES

Performs a wide variety of police and law enforcement duties including investigating incidents of juvenile crime and providing students with an understanding of the role of law enforcement in our society.  Guide students both individually and in the classroom settings regarding ethical and law-related issues that affect their lives in an effort to prevent/reduce juvenile delinquency and juvenile crime. The School Resource Officer (SRO)/Community Policing Officer (CPO) shall assist members of the community in solving neighborhood problems and conflicts seeking long term solutions to crime in the area.

In addition, the SRO/CPO will coordinate with the school staff and community concerns and seek advice and guidance prior to enacting any programs.   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Acts as a liaison with school administrative personnel and community for the department and assist in the development of educational and social programs.
  • Promotes crime prevention by initiating contact with businesses and residents including explaining applicable laws, soliciting cooperation in crime reporting, and otherwise creating a good rapport with area citizens.
  • Provides law enforcement services to the students, teachers, administration, and the community.
  • Abides by district school board policies and coordinates activities through the school principal but shall be responsible to the department in all matters relating to employment, subject to agreements with school board.
  • Conducts and participates in the regular instructional programs of the school under the direction of the school principal.
  • Maintains contact with other school-based officers, department officers, and other law enforcement agencies.
  • Enforces traffic laws and vehicle codes and promotes traffic safety; notes illegal or unsafe driving practices and advises or makes arrests as appropriate; directs traffic, reports unsafe road conditions, and otherwise promotes vehicular and pedestrian safety.
  • Prepares a variety of daily and other reports related to crimes, accidents, and other duties; maintains logs, completes forms, and prepares dispositions and reports as requested.
  • Serves as a liaison between the citizenry and the various divisions within the police department and departments within the city.
  • Coordinates and attends meetings of civic groups to include Citizens Alert, Citizens Patrol and Volusia Crime Prevention Association.
  • Follows-up on reported criminal activity to seek proactive means to reduce future occurrences.
  • Surveys residents to determine the wants, needs and desires of all segments of the community as related to the law enforcement and safety aspects of life within the city.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in general law enforcement work or equivalent public contact work.
  • Have completed training in Crisis Response & Management, Human Diversity/Discriminatory Profiling, Autism Spectrum Disorders & Interviews. Must complete other courses as required.
  • Ability and experience in meeting with both small and large groups of people as a facilitator or discussion leader.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
  • Must receive FCIC certification within ninety (90) days from date of hire.
  • Certification by the State of Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission as a Police Officer.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of police principles and practices. Knowledge of applicable laws and precedents. Knowledge of city and state ordinances.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical and first aid practices.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the City.
  • Ability to observe and detect potential problems.
  • Ability to act effectively in crisis situations.
  • Ability to investigate situations and to prepare written reports.
  • Ability to make oral presentations.
  • Skill in dealing tactfully and effectively with citizens in a wide variety of stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and information in an effective, clear and concise manner both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain proficiency in the use of firearms.
  • Ability to physically detain law breakers.
  • Skill in operating motor vehicles in hazardous situations.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer and ability to use computer software applications.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL DESIGNATION

 

This position is designated as Essential Personnel. Essential Personnel are those who serve in job functions that are essential to the City’s operations and/or its citizens and which are required to be maintained during any severe weather or other emergency condition. Essential Personnel may be required to report to or remain at work during any event deemed to be an emergency by the City of South Daytona.
