Description

POSITION OBJECTIVES

Performs a wide variety of skilled work in maintaining and/or repairing grounds, trees, stormwater drainage systems, streets, right of ways, parks, and other City facilities and areas. All work will be performed under general supervision of the Facility and Grounds Maintenance Supervisor and Crew Leader.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Assist in the maintenance and repair of all City owned buildings and structures.
  2. Assist in grounds maintenance including mowing, edging, trimming trees and hedges, watering, planting, applying herbicide, and picking up trash.
  3. Operate equipment including tractors, mowers, edgers, chainsaws, concrete mixers, rollers, various handheld power tools, bucket truck, and earth moving machinery.
  4. Install and repair irrigation piping.
  5. Repair and replace concrete sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.
  6. Repair asphalt paving (potholes to full patches) and paint traffic striping.
  7. Perform Right-of-Way maintenance including tree, shrub, and grass trimming.
  8. Build concrete forms, pour concrete, lay culvert pipe, lay block, form slopes for culvert pipe, pour lintels for block walls, bend steel for concrete, remove and install pipe, dig trenches for pipe.
  9. Maintain stormwater structures.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, Training and Experience

High School diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency, and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in Facility Maintenance, Grounds Maintenance, and/or General Construction; demonstrated ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Must possess a valid Florida driver's license and CDL.

(A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Florida driver's license.
  • Valid Florida CDL license preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of department methods.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the City.
  • Knowledge of types and uses of Public Works/Parks equipment as related to general construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of health and safety precautions
  • Ability to take orders and produce work
  • Skill in dealing tactfully and effectively with citizens in common interactions.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and information in an effective, clear, and concise manner both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interpret working diagrams, sketches, and simple blueprints.
  • Skill in operating motor vehicles in normal to post-catastrophe situations.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer and ability to use computer software applications.

  • The work environment includes inside (office environment), inside of motor vehicles and outside with exposure to weather conditions including noise, dust, chemicals, slippery surfaces, water, heights and below ground.

  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places, and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.

Essential Personnel are those who serve in job functions that are essential to the City’s operations and/or its citizens and which are required to be maintained during any severe weather or other emergency condition. Essential Personnel may be required to report to or remain at work during any event deemed to be an emergency by the City of South Daytona.
